The Kansas Department of Health & Environment (KDHE) is the state agency in charge of setting child care regulation standards and policies. Local Health Departments oversee the regulated programs in their area. Criminal and child abuse background checks are done on all persons over the age of 10 who live, work or regularly volunteer in any child care facility, excluding children placed in care.
FHRRA, through the Army Child Care in your Neighborhood (ACCYN) Project, can refer military parents to three types of regulated child care.
A CHILD CARE CENTER/PRESCHOOL is authorized to provide care and educational activities for 13 or more children. The center may be located in the licensee’s home in an area that is exclusively set aside for child care. Many child care centers are located in non-residential buildings. Licensing surveys are conducted annually. Educational and training requirements for the center staff and the Program Director are based on the number of children in the units and in the license capacity.
A LICENSED DAY CARE HOME is authorized to care for a maximum of 10 children. Care is usually provided in the licensee’s own home, but may be provided at another residential facility. An Annual survey of the program is conducted. The licensee must be 18 years of age, have an understanding of children and must complete training or readings in child care topics.
A GROUP DAY CARE HOME is authorized to care for a maximum of 12 children with two adults present caring for the children.
